WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction, or lipo, is a body contouring technique that reduces the fat you have in your body. It’s important to make a distinction between fat reduction and weight loss because lipo sits firmly in the former category and shouldn’t be a starting point in your weight loss efforts -- but rather the final touch.

Throughout your life, your body generally carries the same number of fat cells. When you gain or lose weight, you’re not adding or subtracting fat cells, you’re expanding or shrinking your existing cells. With liposuction, Dr. Davila goes in and removes these fat cells, permanently shrinking the overall number in your body.

Liposuction is a great way to tackle stubborn pockets of fat, especially around your:

  • Abdomen

  • Thighs

  • Back

  • Hips

  • Buttocks

  • Knees

  • Upper arms

During your consultation with Dr. Davila, you review the areas you’d like to tackle, and he gives you an idea of what to expect for each.

HOW DOES LIPOSUCTION WORK?

The liposuction procedure is considered to be a minimally invasive surgery since Dr. Davila only makes tiny incisions in the area. After making these incisions, Dr. Davila threads a small tube, or cannula, through until it reaches your subcutaneous layer of fat.

Then Dr. Davila performs tumescent liposuction, which deviates from traditional lipo methods slightly by adding in a step to facilitate the procedure and improve your safety. For the extra step, he injects lidocaine into the treatment area, which accomplishes several important things:

  • Ensures your comfort

  • Swells your fat, making it easier to remove

  • Creates vasoconstriction, which minimizes bleeding

Once he administers the lidocaine, he begins to suction out the fat, permanently removing it from your body.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

While tumescent liposuction is minimally invasive, you should still count on resting for a few days after the procedure. You’re likely to experience some swelling and fluid buildup, which is completely normal, and subsides on its own. To help, Dr. Davila supplies you with compression garments that help keep the swelling to a minimum.

Over the following weeks, you’ll start to see gradual results as your body sets to healing the area and reshaping itself. You need to be patient, however, as your body goes at its own pace. Your best results usually don’t reveal themselves until six months after the treatment.
