Blepharoplasty

A modern solution for drooping, wrinkled, puffy upper eyelids that can occur as a part of the aging process is upper blepharoplasty or upper eyelid surgery. This surgery is usually done for cosmetic reasons. It is also an effective way to improve eyesight for people whose sagging upper eyelids can hinder their vision.

As a person ages, the upper eyelids get baggy and droopy due to weak muscle tone or lack of skin elasticity. Eyelift surgery is usually done separately or in combination with other cosmetic surgeries, such as the brow lift or the facelift.

WHY UPPER BLEPHAROPLASTY?

Aging leads to fatty tissue deposits in the area around the eyes, and the skin tends to lose elasticity, forming excess skin. Due to gravity and weak muscle tone, the upper eyelids become heavier and start sagging, giving a tired and aged appearance to the eyes. These signs of the aging process can also occur because of genetic factors or a health condition. An upper blepharoplasty can help in providing a refreshed and youthful appearance to a person’s eyes.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE?

The upper eyelid surgery can take around three hours to perform, depending upon the extent of the procedure. After a shot of local anesthesia is administered to the patient, cosmetic surgeon Dr. David Davila makes a careful and very small incision along the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Through this incision, he removes or alters the excess skin, fat, and muscle tissue in the area, recontouring the upper lid. He then closes the incision using medical stitches.

POST-SURGERY RECOVERY

Generally, the patient is able to return home within hours after upper blepharoplasty surgery. It is important to arrange for a ride home beforehand, as you will not be able to operate a vehicle for a time following your procedure.

The patient can resume their normal routine after a healing period of seven to ten days. There may be signs of bruising, swelling, and light sensitivity that will gradually reduce within a few days. Use of cold compresses and lubricating eye drops are helpful for alleviating these issues.

It is advisable to avoid activities that could strain the eyes, like swimming, watching TV, lifting heavy things, strenuous workouts, and smoking. It is also advisable to avoid using contact lenses during the healing time since the area will be sensitive and more prone to injury while healing.

Upper blepharoplasty is an effective procedure that can bring back an active and fresh look to a person’s eyes for the next seven to eight years. With a short recovery time, the procedure is convenient and gives the patient a rejuvenated and confident feeling. The upper blepharoplasty is undoubtedly the best option to bring back that youthful look to aged eyes.
