Calf Implants

Calf implants are for those who are unhappy with the appearance of their calves. With calf implants, you can define your lower legs and create an impression of working hard at the gym for hours to get those toned calf muscles. Despite working out, some people may not be able to bulk up their calf muscles; these people can benefit from calf implants.

ARE CALF IMPLANTS RIGHT FOR ME?

You may be a good candidate for calf implants if any of the following apply:

  • You wish to make your calf muscles look bigger.

  • You cannot improve the shape or size of your calves anymore with exercise (it frequently happens with bodybuilders).

  • You want to correct a birth defect or injury which has affected the appearance of your calves.

  • You want your lower legs to be more proportionate to your thighs.

YOUR CALF IMPLANT CONSULTATION

If you are interested in getting calf implants, the next step is a consultation with experienced cosmetic surgeon Dr. David Davila. During this consultation, you will be able to discuss your aesthetic needs and goals with Dr. Davila, who will create a surgical plan and give you his recommendations for the procedure. Bringing photographs can be helpful. Dr. Davila will answer any questions you may have regarding calf enhancement to ensure that you fully understand the procedure.

THE PROCEDURE

Dr. Davila will begin by measuring your legs and will advise you on the size of implants suitable for you. The implants can either be silicone gel based or made from solid silicone.

Before the surgery begins, you will be given general anesthesia. Throughout the surgery, you will be in a face-down position. Dr. Davila will start with making an incision at the back of your knee (where the sheet of connective tissue is located). A pocket will be created between the muscle and a sheet of connective tissue, and this is where the implant will be inserted. The incisions will then be closed using stitches.

RECOVERY

You may have to wear a compression garment for about three weeks after getting your calf implants. This garment is ideal for keeping down any bruising and swelling that results from the surgery. You will also have to wear footwear with a comfortable heel size (about two inches) to prevent putting any strain on your leg muscles.

24 hours of complete bed rest is recommended after the calf augmentation surgery. Any strenuous activity should be avoided for at least six weeks after the date of the procedure.

Interestingly, women feel considerably less pain after the surgery than men. Discomfort typically lasts for the next two days after getting the implants.

You will have to follow up with Dr. Davila two to three days after the surgery. You will also have to visit him three weeks after the surgery and then three weeks later, then six weeks, three months, six months, and once each year after it. These numbers may vary. You should feel at complete ease about six weeks after the surgery.
