Becoming a mommy naturally means putting the wants and needs of your little ones above your own. However, there may come a time when your children are a little older when it becomes imperative to fulfill some personal priorities – such as when you decide that you want to reclaim your pre-baby body. Body changes are a completely normal and accepted part of pregnancy and birth. From enlarged and stretched breast tissue to excess abdominal fat and loose skin, there are a variety of ways in which our bodies can be affected. Whilst diet and exercise can help improve some aspects of our post-baby bodies, there are other areas that don’t seem to ‘snap back’ to how they were before, no matter how hard we try.
Some women are very accepting of their new bodies. However, just as many are frustrated by the way that their new mommy-bod makes them feel about themselves. Poor self-esteem, low confidence, anxiety, and even depression can all occur when someone feels unhappy about the way that they look. Research has shown that post-natal depression is more common in women who are disappointed with their post-baby bodies.
Nevertheless, you don’t have to endure the dissatisfaction of living with the physiological effects of becoming a mom forever. There are many cosmetic surgeries that can address the aspects of your body that concern you the most, and in many cases, these are combined into what is known as a mommy makeover.
WHAT IS A MOMMY MAKEOVER?
A mommy makeover is a name given to the combination of cosmetic surgeries that are most commonly requested after having a baby, although it is possible to determine exactly which procedures you have included based on your individual needs. By combining the surgeries into one planned procedure, patients can achieve a total transformation of their appearance in a single appointment, and – more importantly for many busy moms – they will only need to go through one, albeit is a more intensive, recovery period.
Some of the procedures that are normally included in a mommy makeover include:
BREAST LIFT (POTENTIALLY WITH AUGMENTATION)
The breasts are one of the main areas of the body that undergo changes during pregnancy and after. They grow to enable you to produce milk and as an effect of any weight gain, and once you stop nursing, they will almost certainly shrink back down again. For some women, this means excess skin and lost volume that leaves their breasts hanging lower than before, which can have a detrimental effect on confidence and self-esteem.
Breast lift surgery raises the height of the breasts so that they sit higher on the chest wall. This can make them seem fuller, perkier and more youthful. Many women who have lost a significant amount of volume in their breasts opt to combine the procedure with augmentation surgery. This is where either saline or silicone implants are used to add physical volume to the breasts and make them larger.
Also known as a tummy tuck, this procedure is used to make changes to the area of the body that is most affected by pregnancy – the abdomen. Exactly how big your abdomen will get during pregnancy can vary between moms to be, but there is no doubt that your skin will stretch significantly to accommodate your growing baby. Whilst you may find that you lose any weight that you were carrying fairly quickly, the sagging skin and stretch marks may not seem to shift no matter what effort you make through diet and exercise.
An abdominoplasty separates the skin from the underlying muscles so that they can be tightened. The skin is then pulled tighter back across the abdomen before being secured. In some cases, it may be necessary for the belly button to be relocated. At the end of the surgery, your stomach should be much flatter, smoother and more toned than before.
Liposuction is the most effective procedure for removing stubborn areas of fat that refuse to tone up regardless of how much or what exercise you do. The process involves injecting saline solution into the fat to help break it up, before sucking it up using a long, thin tube attached to a vacuum. Liposuction can be used in many areas of the body including the hips, thighs, flanks, abdomen, buttocks, upper arms and even chin.
By combining popular post-baby cosmetic surgeries into a single procedure, patients can restore their pre-baby shape in just one operation.
