You’d like to think that every breast augmentation surgery goes perfectly well and that patients go onto enjoy their new shape without ever experiencing issues with the appearance of their new boobs. Sadly, although fairly uncommon, there are problems that can occur. If they do, you will almost certainly be advised to undergo breast revision surgery.
Breast revision surgery is a corm of cosmetic surgery that is carried out with the goal of correcting unsatisfactory results from a previous breast enhancement procedure.
DO I NEED BREAST REVISION SURGERY?
There are a number of reasons why breast revision surgery may be considered necessary and recommended by your cosmetic surgeon. If you have any of the following issues, you may need to undergo breast revision surgery.
This refers to a problem with the implant that occurs when the fibrous tissue capsule that forms around the implant after your surgery tightens, squeezing the implant and causing your breasts to appear firm and/or distorted.
RIPPLING OR WRINKLING
Rippling and wrinkling of the skin over the breasts can occur if you had insufficient natural breast tissue to cover the implant, or if the implant you had placed was too large. Many patients who experience this problem because self-conscious or even embarrassed about the appearance of their breasts and it can make them, and you, look older than you really are.
RUPTURE OR LEAKING
Although modern implants are very safe, it isn’t impossible for a rupture/leak to occur. These are easier to spot in saline implants since they tend to cause the breast to deflate, while silicone leaks tend to be slower and may need to be confirmed using an MRI. Breast revision surgery will remove the ruptured implant and replace it.
GENERAL POOR APPEARANCE
Not all cosmetic surgeons are created equal and some have much greater skill and experience than others. If you are unfortunate enough to undergo breast augmentation surgery with a surgeon whose ability is somewhat lacking, you are likely to find that this is reflected in your results. A large number of breast revision surgeries are carried out because the patient is unhappy with the way that their boobs look following their procedure. Some of the issues that can occur from poorly-executed breast augmentation surgery include:
- Poor breast shape
- Implants are too large
- Implants are too small
- The skin appears too tight
- The nipple placement is incorrect or poor
- Breasts are not symmetrical
Fortunately, breast revision surgery carried out by trained, experienced, and skilled cosmetic surgeons can rectify unsatisfactory results and leave you full of confidence in your appearance.
Despite their placement, it is possible for breast implants to shift from their original position. If this happens, they may need to be adjusted so that your breasts look as natural as they should.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BREAST REVISION SURGERY?
If you decide to undergo breast revision surgery, some of the benefits that you can expect to experience can include:
- Breasts that more closely resemble the initial results that you were hoping to achieve.
- Restored confidence in your appearance.
- Breasts that look fuller, perkier, and more youthful.
